The Indiana Rail Road Company was founded in 1986 with the acquisition of 109 miles of railroad from the Illinois Central. In 1990, 46 additional miles were acquired from the Illinois Central, growing the main line to 155 miles in length from Indianapolis to Newton, Illinois.
In its first year of operations, The Indiana Rail Road Company handled approximately 14,000 carloads. Since start-up, The Indiana Rail Road, with its partner/customers, has grown volumes to over 105,000 annual carloads.
In recent years The Indiana Rail Road Company has invested millions of dollars in its track and equipment by installing new track, increasing train speeds and upgrading its locomotive fleet.
The Indiana Rail Road Company connects with all major Class One rail carriers in its territory: CSX Transportation, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific and Norfolk Southern. The Indiana Rail Road Company also connects with the Indiana Southern Railroad and the Louisville & Indiana Railroad Company.
